Supernovae

Presentation by Rob Reid

A supernova (pl: supernovae or supernovas) is a powerful and luminous explosion of a star. A supernova occurs during the last evolutionary stages of a massive star or when a white dwarf is triggered into runaway nuclear fusion. Supernovae are used as standard candles, hence indicators of astronomical distances.

Dr. Rob Reid received his Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the University of Toronto, and went on to postdoctoral fellowships at Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in British Columbia and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Dr. Reid is an active member of the Rochester Astronomy Club.

Observing

Public Sky Observing of the young Moon – 8.0 days after New Moon, planets Saturn Neptune Jupiter Uranus bright stars, double stars, and more by telescope with guidance members of the Rochester Astronomy Club.
